Two Australians are attempting to become the first to cross the Tasman Sea in a kayak, nine months after Andrew McAuley died attempting the challenge.

James Castrission and Justin Jones, both in their mid-20s, will set off on their double kayak on Tuesday, attempting to paddle 2,500km.

Mr McAuley, 39, came close to achieving the record in February, but is believed to have drowned after his kayak capsized while he was asleep.

Mr Castrission says he and Mr Jones have decided to take a different route and have undergone extensive planning. They hope to reach Auckland by Christmas.
