Virgin helps venturers ride waves, reach sky

Can't go on vacation without your kayak or surfboard? Virgin Atlantic Airways will let you check it in. But British Airways won't. Can't go on vacation without your canoe? Virgin Atlantic Airways will let you check it in. But British Airways won't.

British Airways recently banned large sports equipment that's hard for the aircraft to hold or the airport baggage system to handle. So don't show up with your hang glider, kayak, canoe, oars, surfboard, javelin, or windsurfing board and sails.

That prompted Virgin to state it is renewing its commitment to let fliers each check one piece of sports equipment at no charge, including hang gliders, snowboards, skis, bicycles, canoes, kayaks, diving equipment, fishing poles, and golf clubs - as long as they comply with the size and weight limits. The equipment can't weigh more than 70 pounds and - unless it's a surfboard, must not measure more than 62 inches.
