Setback for adventure kayaker

A Tasmanian school teacher has been rescued during an attempt to kayak more than 2,500 kilometres in waters off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Andrew Hughes is currently in hospital in PNG after developing an infection in his knee.

He was rescued last Thursday, 16 days into his journey and about 450 kilometres from Port Moresby.

His sister-in-law Rebecca Hughes co-ordinated the rescue from Adelaide with the help of a local man.

"He very kindly contacted a local tour company and chartered a boat for us which went to collect Andrew," she said.

"It's a five hour voyage from Alotau to the village where Andrew was."

Hughes hopes to resume his journey late this week.
