NZ inquest possible into kayaker's death

Andrew McAuley

The coroner is considering whether it is necessary to have a New Zealand inquest into the death of a trans-Tasman kayaker.

Andrew McAuley disappeared early last month during a solo journey from Australia to New Zealand. He was just 65 kilometres off Milford Sound when his kayak capsized, possibly while he was asleep. A search was launched for his body but it has not been found.

A Tasmanian coroner has opened and adjourned an inquest into Mr McAuley's death and Jim Connolly from the Magistrates Court of Tasmania says it is possible a New Zealand coroner will also investigate. He says that would involve gathering evidence and witness statements from relevant people and agencies within Tasmania, New South Wales and New Zealand. Maritime New Zealand, which was involved in the search and rescue operation, is likely to be interviewed. The spokesman says statements will also be taken from people involved in arranging the journey and constructing the kayak.
